3.1 Phillip Lim utilises an incredible amount of contrast between light and dark colours in all of his work so as to prevent them from appearing to conform to the mainstream fashion culture. While most of the patterns are symmetrical, the adornments on his vests, such as faux pockets and buttons, are often offset in order to assert the individuality of the wearer. The materials in the outerwear often integrates polyester to make it appear stiff, adding a subtle hint of sophistication to the piece.
