Style Watch: George Clooney

  Posted Oct 19th, 2011

During the ’80s and, to some extent, the ’90s, George Clooney was not quite the stylish man we see today. He blended into a long line of stars, and boy-next-door looks. Then something happened: he grew up. He started to show that men of can take pride in their appearance without losing their sense of masculinity.

In 2001, Clooney played the suave, cool, anti-hero Danny Ocean in Ocean’s Eleven. Since then he hasn’t looked back. He has revived that Old-Hollywood style that everyone loves, yet with a modern twist to keep it from looking too stuffy. Jeans have become the bane of men’s style, dominating our wardrobes and worn in too many scenarios.  He made wearing a suit outside of work cool again by losing the tie and replacing it with a casual air.

Get the Look

When it comes to emulating Clooney’s debonair charm, remember the golden rule: it’s all in the personality. He’s rarely seen without his disarming smile and never acts like he’s wearing someone else’s clothes. Then, and only then, come the clothes. Keep to a minimal colour palette of white, greys, blues, and black. Wear a modern cut suit without too stiff a pleat, and preferably one with a peak lapel. Team with a pair of well maintained shoes, an open neck shirt, and a chunky watch.
